Drow House Dalael
Background
House Dalael is perhaps the most influential covert spy, thieving, and smuggling organization in the Underdark rivaled only by the factions of Skullport. At one time, they were one of several Drow families that lived in the Underdark but a civil war over a decade ago left them splintered and on the brink of extinction and leaving them with roughly 30 to 40 survivors. Only quick thinking on the part of the Matron mother saved the survivors, who quickly fled to Skullport until such time as it was safe to reenter the Underdark. It was from this base of operations that House Dalael slowly gathered the contacts in order to function as a coherent force.
The Matron mother was satisfied with operating her small operation out of Skullport and at that time had no plans on expanding her influence. But an encounter with a band of adventurers while transporting some stolen goods to Luskan left the house without their Matron mother and the three eldest sons. This left control of the house to Drisinil Dalael, who had larger plans for the house.
Using her knowledge of the Underdark and her extensive contacts made while operating as a spy in Luskan and Waterdeep, she quickly moved her operations from Skullport and began to enlarge their operations. After a few years their operations had grown to include most of the Savage Frontier and rivaling that of Skullport itself. After several expeditions into the unexplored caves of the area revealed new routes, she began to use the Underdark extensively as a means to transport her cargo. This provided a discrete way to smuggle goods for many of her clients, some of which include the Scarlet Brotherhood, the Pirate Captains of Luskan, and even a few secret clients in Waterdeep, Neverwinter, and Skullport. She has yet to establish a foothold in Silverymoon or Mirabar but she is always trying. She is hoping that the recent conflict over the new nation of Luruar will provide herthe opportunity she needs. So far, the governments of those cities have successfully thwarted her attempts.
Location
House Dalael’s base of operations is located on an obscure island in the middle of the Darksea. The island is the home of a ruined city of Drow elven origin that was destroyed by dwarves and deep gnomes many millennia ago. Her location may soon change as she is researching into possibly moving the base of operations to the ruined human civilization found in the Darkearth Swamp, providing her the perfect hideout for her operations. She has yet to secure any area that is safe but with her drider allies helping her that may occur soon.
Allies and Contacts
Drisinil Dalael has contacts and allies scattered all over the Savage Frontier. Near Neverwinter, underneath the Neverwinter Forest, she has won the services of a band of duergar led by an influential Shadow Dragon who was recently killed at the hands of adventurers. Although she has lost the services of the Shadow Dragon, she has kept the duergar as her foot soldiers in the area. She has also swayed a large band of driders who follow her out of revenge. The driders also have chitin followers that have been found to be perfect scouts for the Underdark. She has promised them a chance to strike out against the house that was responsible for their plight, which happens to be the same house that deposed House Dalael many years ago. Eventually, she hopes to use them with her other allies to overthrow the current house. She is in no hurry, however, and is biding her time before the next war breaks out, giving her the ample opportunity for revenge. Although she would stand a reasonable chance of success, she does not wish to risk herself or her family in a costly war without a guarantee of success.
One of her most recent acquisitions was a contact in the huge kobold city of Kata Kome. This serves several purposes for her. First, she uses the city to pawn her more "questionable" items to the merchants who frequent Kata Kome and do not care much for the origin of such items. Second, she uses the city to expand her "ears" in the area as very few things occur in the area without it being mentioned in Kata Kome. Third, she plans on using the inhabitants of Kata Kome in order to fulfill her dream of destroying the current Drow house in power. She plans on using their hatred of the Drow elves in order to draw them into a war with the ruling house. Then, once she has successfully drawn the two factions into the war, she will be the deciding blow in the fight. She currently holds no desire of conquering Kata Kome, but if the opportunity presented itself, she would jump at the chance. Unfortunately, that would entail needing a puppet government at her control and as such she has other important items on her agenda. The city is too chaotic for any attempt to have any chance of success.
The drider clan mentioned has approximately 50 drider and over 100 chitin members and follow an obscure god represented by a retriever, a large spider with vorpal-like claws and four eyes that can emit beams of various effects much like a beholder. They live in the ruins of an ancient human civilization in the Darkearth swamp and have become a source of much strength for Drisinil. Previously, she had known about the ruins but did not have sufficient strength to defeat the denizens that they within, mainly the trolls. The driders live in an old magic temple. Drisinil has traded her family’s expertise in magic in exchange for deciphering the magicks of the temple. She has provided the driders with a means to open the gates to their god and they have provided her with access to magic not seen for many centuries. The magic found is not very powerful, but has increased her abilities somewhat. Her agents keep looking for signs of any powerful magic that could be useful to their cause. She has hired out many of the driders to the Zhentarim in the area who are trying to open gates in order to expand their trading operations.
The Zhentarim have hired her services in order to better navigate around the Underdark, especially around Mount Hotenow where their major find is located. The Zhentarim are trying to locate and open several of the lost gates of the lost elven race so that they could transport their goods faster and with less restriction. Their efforts are meeting with resistance from the Lord’s Alliance and the Harpers but the Zhentarim have enough resources available that it is only a matter of time before they are successful. The Zhentarim and House Dalael have agreed that once these gates are opened, they will share equally in their use, but she has very little trust in the Zhentarim and waits for their betrayal to give her an excuse to defeat them. She has gotten assurances from the Scarlet Brotherhood that the Zhentarim will not be a problem when this happens.
The alliance with the Scarlet Brotherhood, led by Zhaegos, has resulted in much power for her. The Scarlet Brotherhood has hired her clan to transport and smuggle most of their more "sensitive" items and have also hired her to help them find the lost human civilization lost in the Darkearth region. She has only given them little knowledge as she also has little faith in her alliance with them. Zhaegos has an interest in the Zhentarim’s gates, but not for transport. His goal is to open the gates in order to summon hordes of his brethren to help him conquer the North. Once the gates are opened, he plans on doing away with the Zhentarim in the area but is unsure about Drisinil’s motives. Drisinil values her neutrality greatly and only waits for the time when she can side with the victor and share in the spoils.
Another of her allies is the orcish warlord Garak Bloodletter. Recently, they shared in a widespread elf slavery ring until they were discovered by a band of adventurers hired by Lord Penryn of Neverwinter. This resulted in the location of her hideout being discovered by the Lord’s Alliance, something she wished to avoid dearly. It also resulted in the incarceration of Garak Bloodletter by the Lord’s Alliance. As Eriond One-Arm now controls the orcs and their allies, it is his immense hatred of Drow that has her worried. She fears (correctly) that he cannot be trusted and has decided to begin severing ties with him. She has already started looking for somewhere to relocate her operations in order to avoid an attack by agents of the Lord’s Alliance or any of her other enemies.
She also has assistance from Vhaerun's Legion, a group of priests dedicated to Vhaerun, the Drow god of male Drow and of thieving and espionage. This alliance has provided her with many resources that were previously unavailable to her such as information and contacts in new areas. Vhaerun's Legion is currently located in Uluitur (a magic and trade oriented drow city located roughly beneath Waterdeep and this alliance has provided them with a new area to spread their faith. The two have a "you scratch my back, I scratch yours" arrangement. Vhaerun's Legion representative, the high priest Quild fills the capacity as Dalael's "spiritual leader" and is one of her second-hand men. In exchange, she provides the legion with added influence and money that can be used to further spread the word of Vhaerun, especially among Drow elves. The clergy of Vhaerun has established several enclaves of Dalael influence in many regions of the Darkearth and Underdark areas to the benefit of both parties. Drisinil is even having temples of Vhaerun built in every Dalael enclave, something that has been met with great favor by Quild. Members of the Legion will operate the enclaves until proper acolytes can be trained that are of Dalael descent.
The alliance has also allowed them to focus on one major threat to both groups: Xanathar, the beholder who operates a major information and smuggling ring in Skullport. It was under this creature that Drisinil had learned all of her skills and Xanathar planned that she would eventually be given a place of her own to control. Unfortunately for him, she left his service abruptly and took a large portion of his business with her. As Vhaerun's Legion was recently in a power struggle with the beholder, this takes the pressure off of them momentarily until a tactic can be devised to handle the beholder better. Xanathar would want nothing more than to take out his upstart pupil but has met with no success.
Enemies
Obviously, the Lord’s Alliance and the Harpers figure largely in her list of enemies. They have lost many of their spies to the house and have been the recipient of most of her most fruitful plans. As she is a thorn in their side, they would dearly love to see her eradicated. They have placed bounties and even hired outside help in order to find her and get rid of her but so far it has been for naught. They recently have found her secret location, but a following raid by Lord’s Alliance secret forces resulted in a trap that killed many of their top officers. They are very wary of her tricks and have been the recipient of many of them, with great loss of life and property involved.
Perhaps her greatest enemy is Xanathar, the beholder who trained Drisinil in the skills she knows now. He has lost a good portion of his business to her and wishes to get it back. He would also like to make her an example and teach everyone a lesson in what happens when he is double-crossed. As the thick rock of the Underdark makes scrying attempts impossible, Xanathar has not yet been able to find her but he is constantly trying. Both the Lord’s Alliance and the Harpers agree with them that if Drisinil is to be killed then the entire operation will fall apart. This is mostly true, as the rest of the family does not have the background that she possesses. That has proven harder and harder to do. Only a handful of people have ever met her and most of those have yet to be seen since, or have been found dead at the hands of an assassin’s dagger.
